How to Get from Rhodes Airport to Rhodes Town by Bus

If you are about to live the Greek summer of your dreams and have booked a holiday in Rhodes, one of Greece’s largest islands, this is the guide for you. If you aren’t planning to rent a car and don’t want to cash out on taxis, you may be worried about how to get around the island.

Rhodes actually has a pretty extensive and affordable bus network that hits all the main points of the island. The one from the airport to Rhodes town goes every 30ish minutes and got me super close to my accommodation in Rhodes Old Town.

Before coming to Rhodes, I had read about the buses but also read comments online that they are overly full and unreliable. That has not been my experience at all. All buses I have taken so far have been on time, not overly full and gotten me exactly where I needed to be.

I’ve summarised everything you need to know about the bus from Rhodes Airport to Town below:

How to get from Rhodes Airport to Rhodes town by bus?

airport of rhodes

Rhodes airport, like most Greek Islands, has a reputation for being overly full and chaotic. I arrived in the morning with only hand luggage and honestly had no issues. I was out of the plane and officially on Greek soil within 20 minutes of landing. You will most likely be picked up by bus from your plane and driven to the arrivals door, from which I just followed the exit signs.

Once you have left through the exit and are in the arrivals/departures area, head left. There are numbers above the doors, you are looking for door 6 or 7

Exit through that door and then turn left again until you reach the  bus stop. It has the typical bus stop cover and there is a big café behind it, so it’s pretty hard to miss. If you feel lost, don’t hesitate to ask someone. The Greek are usually super kind and open to help.

Buses leave around every 30 minutes, you can check the exact timetable on the airport’s website. The bus company in Rhodes also had a timetable which differed by 5 minutes, I have attached it below.

The bus journey from Rhodes Airport to Rhodes:

When I got on the bus at around 11am, it was still pretty empty. The driver charged 3.50€ in cash at the front of the bus, then gave me a paper ticket which a lady then ripped to validate the journey (at least that’s what I’m guessing).

I was worried there wouldn’t be seats, but the bus didn’t start to fill up till we were about halfway to Rhodes Town. Bring a fan if you can (I had a small handheld one), it does get a little hot especially if you have a bunch of luggage.

The ride took about 4o minutes to get to the centre of Rhodes Town. It followed Ialisou Road then Al. Diakou then Papagou until the final stop which is here. There were plenty of stops along this route, if your hotel is not in the centre itself.

From the main bus stop in Rhodes, it took me about 15 minutes to walk to my hostel in Old Town. There are quite a few cobble stones in Old Town, just something to keep in mind regarding luggage. Some hotels have golf buggies to get you around too.

The buses in Rhodes work pretty well, the timetables though are a bit confusing. The airport website has a slightly different one than the actual bus company, which is in the picture above. The difference is only 5 minutes or so and the buses are very regular, so I’d just turn up in time for whichever is the slightly earlier time.

Once you are in town, there is an office by the main bus terminal where you can ask which ones the exact times are, especially if you have a late night flight or something like that.

You could also get a taxi from Rhodes airport to the town. Most taxi places in Rhodes itself have like a pre-set price list, which is nice as that means you don’t have to worry about scams as much.

You can pre-book a taxi on the official airport website (here) and a ride to e.g. the port in Rhodes costs around 40€. Taxi Rhodes also has a price list where the ride to town costs between 30-35€, and Rhodes Taxi has 30€ on their website. So as you can see, there are a ton of companies you can pre-book.

There are also shuttle transfers available straight to your hotel, some hotels offer them themselves or you can book one on Get Your Guide for around 40€.

The last way is to rent a car or scooter. There are a couple of good car rental places right by the airport, such as rentacar Rhodes. For motorbikes and quads, I’d recommend to just rent from Rhodes city as you will likely get a better deal there.

Where to stay in Rhodes Town?

Rhodes Town has the modern part which is closer to the beach, as well as the stunning Old Town. Both have their advantages – in the modern part, you are much closer to the beach and nightlife, whereas the Old Town feels like stepping into a romantic movie set in the medieval times.

How to get around Rhodes by public transport:

As discussed, the bus network in Rhodes is pretty extensive and reliable. The best website to check for times and prices is this official bus one. Buses connect all major areas such as Rhodes Town to Faliraki or to Lindos.

There is also the office by the main bus station (ΜΑΝΔΡΑΚΙ), where I found the staff were happy to help.
