Is Berlin Safe for Solo Female Travellers in 2026?

Germany’s capital city is a hotspot for history, culture, art and nightlife and a must-visit in Europe. But how safe is it really for solo female travellers and is there anything you need to know before visiting? This is the ultimate solo, female travel guide for Berlin from my experience.

How to get to Berlin?

You will likely either fly into Berlin Brandenburg Airport or come via train or bus (e.g. Flixbus – often the most affordable) from another nearby country.

Flying into Berlin Brandenburg Airport

There is an airport express train every 15 or so minutes which takes you from the airport to the main station (Hauptbahnhof) in a little over 20 minutes. A single journey costs just 5€!

You could also get a taxi, which takes 30+ minutes and cost more than 50€.

By Train

Europe is incredibly well connected by train and you can move easily between countries. The German train website is called Bahn.de and it has all trains that go into Berlin on there.

Where to stay in Berlin?

Berlin has an excellent public transport system, even throughout the night. Due to that, it can be convenient to stay right in the centre (Berlin Mitte), but is not necessary and other areas may give you a better glimpse into the “real” Berlin.

Best hostels and hotels in Berlin:

🛏️ The Circus Hostel  (very central, nice rooms, clean)
🏬Hotel Johann  (quiet location with transport links, nice rooms, good value)
🏩THE GATE GARDEN Hotel  (super beautiful, central and huge garden)

How to get around Berlin?

Berlin has a really strong public transport system, including trains, trams and buses. A single ticket costs 4€, 24 hr from 11.20€ (depending on your zones). Tickets are available at most stations and even in trams (though sometimes coin operated), but also through the BVG app

Citymapper or even Google Maps work great here for figuring out the best routes.

Berlin Safety for Solo, Female Travellers

Is Berlin Safe for Solo Female Travellers Overall?

I personally think that Berlin is a great city for solo, female travellers. It is super open-minded, fun and you’ll meet tons of other travellers, expats and locals. There is so much to do, most people speak excellent English and it is probably the least judgemental city ever (at least in Germany).

I have had one or two uncomfortable experiences here when I was younger, so I’d recommend unexperienced travellers to come with someone else for the first time. Because while the thriving nightlife is fun, it is also where you need to have your wits about you and know to read situations well.

From my recent visit though, I feel like even that aspect that I was previously concerned about has changed and I felt a lot more comfortable even at night. Public transport runs all throughout the night and nightlife areas are busy and well-lit.

During the day, the city is honestly one of the safest I’ve been to! During the night, get yourself a drinking buddy and go for it (though many locals do also go alone, so if you’re comfortable, you could also go alone).

How Safe Is Berlin Compared to Other European Cities?

I’d personally rate Berlin as one of the safer European cities, probably above places like Rome and Paris on a pickpocket and scam basis. Avoid the people “collecting signatures” and you will be completely fine!

Public transport links here are great even all throughout the night, meaning you will not get stuck no matter the time. That’s a huge safety aspect that some cities lack.

For nightlife, I didn’t feel less or more safe than in other big European cities. Keep your wits about you, an eye on your drink and leave as soon as you feel uncomfortable.

Overall, I’d apply the same safety precautions as for any city, but Berlin is definitely one of the safest.

💅How to Stay Safe as a Solo Female Traveller

Is Berlin Safe at Night for Solo Female Travellers?

My only negative experience I have had in Berlin was during an evening event (10 years ago though), so I’d recommend to be extra careful while clubbing or out at night. I was grabbed inappropriately, which can (and has) happened elsewhere but just for full transparency.

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend going out alone, try and find a buddy in a hostel and stick to them the whole night. I’d also say be cautious regarding drinks and unlit alleys, same as anywhere else really.

Many popular clubs have strong security and improved their safety measures, so Berlin is now considered one of the safe places in Europe for nightlife.

I’d also recommend googling any clubs or bars before going, as many have dress codes or just a certain vibe you may not be comfortable with (cough Berghain cough). As a solo, female traveller, I’d also be really cautious taking anything offered to you!

Public transport is still really good at night and safe, though I’d recommend an Uber anyway if you get separated from your buddy.

I went out recently  in Berlin and had no safety concerns whatsoever, but I was with a group of people which I think really helped the experience.

Safest Areas to Stay in Berlin for Solo Female Travellers

There used to be a time where some areas of Berlin were less safe than others, but nowadays most are safe, clean and have their own unique charm. Staying near the centre (Berlin Mitte) is great for sightseeing and being within walking distance to most things.

Other areas may give you a better glimpse into the “real” Berlin. Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg are younger districts, international and where you’ll find a lot of the nightlife. Prenzlauer Berg has a rich history but is now very upscale.

Common Scams and Tourist Risks in Berlin

The only scam I consistently see in Berlin is the clipboard one where two girls come up and try to get a signature for some charitable cause and while you are distracted, the other one steals your phone/wallet. Tell them a strict NO (or NEIN in German) and keep walking. It’s easy to avoid.

I’d also just watch my bag on busy transport as pickpockets are in any major city.

Lastly, we’ve already talked about this but be vigilant at night, especially out clubbing etc. Watch your drinks, stick to well-lit and busy areas and trust your instincts.

Emergency Numbers and Safety Apps in Berlin

In Germany, the Emergency number is 112. This will work across all of Europe too.

Police is 110. If it’s not urgent, call +49 30 9018 22010.

Germany also has an app called nora through which you can contact all kinds of emergency services. You can also get emergency help in situations where you can’t speak. I’d recommend downloading it just in case.

Final Verdict: Is Berlin Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

Yes, Berlin is safe for solo, female travellers and a great city to explore solo. Keep safety precautions in mind, especially at night, and you will have an amazing time in this unique city!
