Is Kraków Safe for Solo Female Travellers in 2026?

Kraków is a stunning mix of historic, medieval streets, vibrant culture, delicious food and friendly locals. There are so many things to do and explore. But is the city safe for solo, female travellers and is there anything you need to know? We’ll go through it all in this post 🙂

How to get to Kraków?

You will likely either fly into Krakow Airport or come via train or bus (e.g. Flixbus – often the most affordable) from another nearby country or within Poland.

Flying into Kraków Airport (John Paul II International Airport)

There are two ways to get to the city centre using public transport:

  1. By train – A KML train takes you Kraków Główny (main station) in under 20 minutes. It runs every 30 minutes during the day and costs 20PLN ($5.50).
  2. By bus – alternative to train (no 300) and runs hourly through the night (no 902).  It costs just 6PLN ($1.66) and takes 20ish minutes. It drops you off slightly outside the Old Town.

For both, there are ticket machines in the arrival hall or by the bus stop.  For trains you can also buy tickets on the train itself or on their website.

By Train

If you’re coming by train, you are likely getting off at Kraków Główny, which is the main station. I found it pretty easy to navigate and Google Maps will tell you how to get to your accommodation from here. If you need to take a tram, there are ticket machines right by the tram lines.

The official website for trains within Poland is this one. If coming from another country, I’d recommend checking their local train website for tickets.

By Bus

I actually came to Krakow from Budapest via Flixbus. The journey took around 7 hours and tickets cost around 20€ (less if booked early). There’s also a Polish company called Sindbad with bus connections across the country and internationally.

Where to stay in Kraków?

Krakow centre is incredibly walkable and the Old Town is beautiful. I’d recommend staying within walking distance to it, you can use the Vistula River and Planty Park (which surrounds the Old Town) as guidelines.

Is Kraków Safe for Solo Female Travellers Overall? My Experience

I personally felt really safe in Krakow and had the best time. I went out at night with friends and walked home late with another girl and we had no issue.

The data supports this experience. Krakow itself is consistently ranked in the top 10 safest cities in Europe and Poland in total ranks high on the safety index.

I’d say as long as you keep your wits about you, avoid quiet and unlit places and ideally have a buddy for nights out (same as everywhere), you’re totally safe to explore Krakow as a solo, female traveller.

How Safe Is Kraków Compared to Warsaw or Prague?

I have visited all three cities and felt really safe in all of them. That being said, Krakow has that smaller city vibe that brings with it a sense of safety and community.

Warsaw ranks highly on the safest cities in Europe too, on par with Krakow.

Prague is also near the top of all safety lists, though it is mentioned that more petty crime is seen here due to the volume of tourism. I also felt I had to be a little more aware of my surroundings in Prague than in Krakow, but I’d say the golden rule is to always keep your valuables close and hidden where possible.

Is Kraków Safe at Night for Solo Female Travellers?

I went out in Krakow with friends and had the absolute best time. I felt safe and was fine to walk the 15-minutes home afterwards.

I would recommend having someone to go out with if you can, maybe someone you meet in the hostel or through a Facebook Travel Group. I’d honestly recommend this for any place you are solo travelling as a woman, going out is unfortunately much safer when not alone.

There are night trams and buses you can take, if necessary, but ride shares are also readily available. Most popular are Bolt, Uber, and Free Now.

Getting Around: Transportation Tips for Women Traveling Alone

Much of Krakow is walkable and I’d highly recommend doing it as you’ll find so many hidden gems and beautiful areas.

Trams, buses and trains are also very reliable and frequent, making getting around easy. Make sure you have a valid ticket and validate it!!

You can also get the Jakdojade app for public transport in Poland, though I found Google Maps was enough.

Transport in Krakow is very safe, I’d just keep my bag close and watch out, same as everywhere.

Safest Areas to Stay in Kraków for Solo Female Travellers

As we’ve now established, Krakow is exceptionally safe and the Old Town with all the sights is very walkable.

For mostly convenience, but also maximum safety, I’d recommend staying as close to Old Town as possible. You can use the Vistula River and Planty Park (which surrounds the Old Town) as guidelines, ideally you don’t want to be more than a 15 minute walk away.

🏨Where to Stay in Krakow

Common Scams and Tourist Risks in Kraków

A common scam (more common for guys) is being led to an overly expensive night club or even strip club (these are just money stealing machines in Krakow) by “lost” girls targeting you on the street. I’d research where you want to go prior to going and stick to it.

The rose scam, where someone (sometimes a child) hands you a rose as a “gift” then tells you a sob story to ask for money, can happen in Krakow too. Avoid anyone handing you anything for free!

When drinking at a bar, say what brand of liquor you want or “the cheapest”, otherwise many will just pour the most expensive. Wyborowa is a Polish Vodka that’s good and won’t break the wallet.

The last thing to be aware of is currency exchange. Research the place before going, know the current market rate and walk away if anything doesn’t seem right!

Emergency Numbers in Kraków

In Poland, the Emergency number is 112. This will work across all of Europe too. It’s best to have a Polish speaker as the operator may not speak English, so get someone around you to help! Hotels, bars and restaurants should always be open and trained to support if something happens.

Final Verdict: Is Kraków Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

Yes, Kraków is very safe for solo, female travellers and one of my favourite destinations. It’s so beautiful, walkable and so much to do! Would highly recommend visiting!
