Japow on a Budget: Affordable Niseko Accommodation
Bell | 10 January 25
Niseko is one of Japan’s most well-known ski resorts and for good reason – lots of powder, a big resort and accessible backcountry make it an incredible choice for your next ski holiday. It can get quite expensive for peak season, so here are the top affordable Niseko accommodation options that won’t break the bank.
I am currently doing a ski season in Niseko Japan as a snowboard instructor, which has been a dream come true and about three years in the works. I didn’t know what to expect, but had heard of dreamy powder and ramen by the slopes and if you know me, it doesn’t take much more than that to get me on a plane.
Over the past four weeks here in Niseko, I have learned so much about the ski resort, the beautiful town of Niseko and its surroundings and I want to share it with anyone thinking of coming here.
However, I know that budget can be a huge issue when thinking of Japan as a ski holiday destination, so I have decided to start with a budget series on Niseko. First off – accommodation. Hotels in Niseko can get very expensive during peak season, but I have collected all the best budget options (and there are more than you may think) for you.
See you on the slopes 🙂

ToggleHow to get to Niseko:
The closes airport to Niseko is New Chitose Airport (CTS) in Sapporo. I would highly recommend flying into this airport as from there it is only about 2-3 hours to the resort.
There are three options to get to the resort – private shuttle, bus or train:
Train is the cheapest option and does not need to be pre-booked, but you will need to change trains 2-3- times so not ideal if you have a lot of luggage. You can search for your journey here.
Bus is the happy medium and how I got to Niseko. It is a little more expensive (around $35) and you need to pre-book in advance, especially in peak season, but it will take care of all your luggage and get you to Niseko in 3 hours with no further effort from you. I would recommend the Hokkaido Resort Liner which you can book here, but there are also the Hokkaido Chūō Bus and the White Liner.
There are also a bunch of direct shuttle buses which are more expensive but will often even drop you right by your hotel. Some hotels even have their own private ones so ask for that when booking. Options are NDS, Sky Express and NGS.

When looking at where to stay in Niseko Ski resort, you will quickly be looking at 5-6 different options. Four of them are the villages directly connected to the ski resort, aka Hirafu, Niseko Village, Annupuri, Hanazono. Staying in any of these four areas will mean you are close to ski lifts, which is so important for a ski holiday.
Niseko Hirafu is the most lively out of the four, but can also be the most pricy. Hanazono is the fanciest area of the four with many high-end hotels. It is a really nice ski area, though easily accessible from Hirafu. Niseko Village is really small and quieter and Annupuri has some great beginner slopes.
Kutchan is another option connected by the resort liner about half an hour from Hirafu and many staff actually have their accommodation there. It is a lot cheaper but buses can be a bit unreliable or fill up quickly.
The last option are accommodations a bit further out that can only be accessed by car. They are often a lot cheaper, so if you were looking into rental cars anyway, this may be a great option. Just remember you need an International Drivers Permit to drive in Japan.
Accommodation within walking distance to the ski lifts
Pension Locomotion – with the perfect location in Hirafu, this small lodge is ideal for those looking for budget accommodation close to the ski lifts. Make sure to book early as it sells out quickly for peak dates!
Alpenglow Lodges Annupuri – located just opposite the ski lifts in Annupuri, this is the perfect budget-friendly option for someone looking for a quieter stay. It has a lovely common area and also bus connections to Hirafu if you want to explore the restaurants/nightlife there.
Ramat and Snowgum Ski Lodge Niseko – These are two lodges next to one another run by the same people. They are located about a 20-minute walk to the nearest lift so a little bit further, but are affordable with great reviews. There is a free resort bus every 30ish minutes that will take you to Hirafu in just 5-10 minutes.
Always Niseko – this accommodation is about a 15-minute walk to Ace Chair Lift and is connected to the free shuttles. It is good value for money for the location but make sure to book early as it sells out.
Accommodation with public transport to the ski resort
One thing to keep in mind when relying on the public transportation in Niseko is that it isn’t super reliable and doesn’t run late. There are taxis though that can get you back from e.g. dinner or drinks. The free shuttles often fill up quite quickly at peak times, which can be annoying. That being said, it is manageable and you will save a lot by not staying right in the center.
Midtown Niseko – located just outside Hirafu, this hotel offers decent rooms at a fair price, especially during peak season. It is also located along the free resort shuttle line and around 25 minutes walk from the ski lifts.
Pensione Uno – this pension offers super affordable and clean rooms with great transport links to all resorts. Annupuri is the closest and reached by bus in only 10 minutes.
The Stay Niseko N2 – this hotel is located in Kutchan, where you will also find a lot of staff accommodation for those working in resorts. It has hence got several public transport links (paid and free shuttles). The rooms are on the smaller side but super affordable.
Bistare Kana – this hotel is along the free shuttle line and close to Annupuri with reviews mentioning that the host will even drop you off at the gondola in the mornign for first chair. If that isn’t service, I don’t know what is!
Slowlife Lodge – this lodge offers free shuttles to the ski lifts, lots of activities and affordable accommodation.
Accommodation near Niseko for those with a rental car
Niseko Goshiki Onsen Hotel – a 15-minute drive to Annupuri, this hotel’s main attraction is its Onsen (Japanese hot springs). In addition, it is very affordable and close to the ski resort.
Cottage Cruising – cottages with amazing views of Mount Yotei and within driving distance of Niseko resort.
Hotel Resort Inn Niseko – affordable rooms with super lovely staff, only a short drive from the resort.
The Lodge Moiwa – located only a few minutes from Moiwa ski resort, this capsule style hotel is budget-friendly and within driving distance of Niseko ski resort. Perfect for anyone who might want to give both resorts a go.
Ski In Ski Out Accommodation Options in Niseko that are a bit pricier
Ski in ski out is the dream for any ski holiday, so if you are happy to splurge a bit more, these hotels are the best slope-side options.
Muwa Niseko – located right by Ace Gondola, the slope ends right in front of this hotel. It offers luxurious rooms, private onsens and even ski rentals.
First Tracks – an apartment complex located right by “family run”, the beginner slope that connects Hirafu to the rest of the ski resort.
Yumoto Niseko Prince Hotel Hirafutei – most well-known for its slope-side Onsen, this hotel is again right by the slopes and offers convenient ski lockers and the perfect location.
Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono – if you want true luxury right by the slopes of Hanazono, this is the hotel for you. They offer Onsens, multiple restaurants and detailed service.
Ki Niseko – Located right by the slopes of Hirafu, this ski in ski out hotel features Onsens, beautiful bedrooms and a free shuttle service.
How many days do you need in Niseko?
I would say an absolute minimum of 4 days is required to be able to ski/snowboard all 4 of Niseko’s resort and also make the most of the amazing restaurants, Onsen and nightlife here. You can easily spend a week or even two at this resort without getting bored, as there are so many different runs and lots of backcountry options.
What are the best months to visit Niseko for skiing/snowboarding?
The best snow conditions are late December to February. Keep in mind that around Christmas and Chinese New Year the resort is extremely busy and expensive, so if you can travel outside of those dates, I would highly recommend it.
Mid-January and February after Chinese New Year are less busy times to visit with still amazing powder snow.
