I’ve rarely seen a place where history blends with culture the way it does in Bosnia & Herzegovina’s capital Sarajevo. You can still feel the echoes of recent wars and footsteps of many empires that passed through here. The influence of east and west is apparent, making for an amazing city full of coffee shops, sights and delicious food. Here is where to stay in Sarajevo for any budget!

Where to stay in Sarajevo:

Sarajevo is built into a sort of bowl and surrounded by mountains. I’d hence avoid staying too far out of the city centre to avoid having to battle uphill every day.

A good guideline is anything within walking distance of the Baščaršija, the old Bazaar area. That is where most of Sarajevo’s sights are located and it’s a beautiful area, that showcases the blend of cultures and religions that Sarajevo is known for.

You could also venture out a little into the more modern part of Sarajevo, called the Centar district. It is well connected via trams and has a more contemporary vibe.

I personally love the Old Town.

Best Hotels in Sarajevo for Every Budget:

How many days should you stay in Sarajevo?

I would recommend at least 2 days to see the city and explore it’s amazing shops, delicious food and the main sights. One of those days should include a tour of the Hope Tunnel that is usually run by survivor of the war.

An additional 1-2 days allow you some extra time to explore and a daytrip. I’d highly recommend visiting Mostar or some of the incredible water falls that Bosnia & Herzegovina has to offer.

So an ideal trip would be between 3-4 days, though any additional days are a bonus for more exploring!

Is Sarajevo a Walkable City?

Yes, the Old Town of Sarajevo and even transition into the newer part from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Yugoslavia are pretty walkable. Many streets in the Old Town are also pedestrian-only, or very small and harder to access by car.

To get to the further out districts, there’s a good tram network. A ticket costs just 1.80 BAM (less than 1€).
