Whether you are headed to Biarritz for the world-famous surfing or to check out the beautiful Basque country, this destination is THE place to be this year. To help you with planning your trip, I have summarised all the top accommodation options in this beautiful beach town, from budget to luxury.
I spent an entire month volunteering in Biarritz and it is easily the most fun work for accommodation placement I have had. It is a surf town and so vibes are always high and everyone is just there to enjoy life, surf, chill on the beach and eat delicious food.
The city itself is really cute with Basque-style architecture, small local shops and beautiful beaches. There is always something to do, from surfing to the endless festivals every evening. In addition, Biarritz also has tons of incredible day trip options (check out my full guide here) for those wanting to explore more of the Basque country.
So, if you are planning your next surf trip or wanting to enjoy the peaceful live of Southern France, here are all the best accommodation options in Biarritz:

ToggleWhere to stay in Biarritz, France for any traveller:

During peak season (June-August), Biarritz gets pretty busy thanks to its rising popularity over the years. While you can still find budget accommodations, it is much easier if you travel outside of those months. Personally I find late May and Late August/September the perfect time for a trip to Biarritz, with still great waves, good weather and a lot less people. I’d recommend to stay close-ish to the city centre if you are planning to surf (check out surf beach locations here). Here are all my top accommodation recommendations:
Affordable hostels in Biarritz
Biarritz Surf Hostel – I volunteered in this hostel for a month and miss it dearly. The place is super clean (trust me, I know the cleaning process inside out), the staff and guests are so friendly and there is always something going on. There’s also a WhatsApp group chat that is amazing for making plans or finding a surf buddy. Surfboards are free but you need to rent a bike in order to get it to the beach – if you are only surfing for an hour or less I’d recommend to just rent a board at the beach directly.
Nami House – I also heard good things about this hostel while staying in Biarritz. Like the previous hostel, it is a little away from the beach and the city but within walkable distance and they will help you with organising surf lessons (not a surf hostel itself though).
COAST – Utopy Hostel – This is the newer of the two Coast hostels in Biarritz (as far as I’m aware) and is located right by Plage de la Côte des Basques, making it pretty unbeatable location wise. It only has one 15-person dorm but reviews are very positive.
Hotels at different price points in Biarritz:
$ Hotel Au Bon Coin – Possibly the best value for money you can find in Biarritz, even during peak season. The staff is extremely friendly, rooms are small but nice and the location is great.
$ Hôtel Edouard VII – A super centrally located hotel at a very fair price. Beaches are only a 5-minute walk away and they have breakfast included too.
$$ ALFRED HOTELS – Les Halles – there are actually two Alfred Hotels in Biarritz, both have great reviews. Les Halles is a little more affordable as it is maybe a 5-minute longer walk to the beach (8 minutes instead of 3). For the price, an amazing hotel!
$$ Hôtel Gamaritz – located super close to all major beaches and surf locations, this hotel has beautiful rooms and lovely staff.
$$$ Hôtel Le Garage Biarritz – If you fancy staying somewhere slightly more luxurious, this hotel is a great choice. With delicious breakfast and a pool on offer, its location is unbeatable.
$$$ Chateau Du Clair De Lune – If you’ve ever dreamed of staying in a French Château, this is your chance. This hotel offers pure ellegance, great facilities and a quieter area.
How to get to Biarritz?
Biarritz does have an airport, however it is pretty small and only has a few airlines flying in and out. That means it can get somewhat expensive.
I found that the cheapest airport to fly into was Bordeaux, from which you can get a train for 15-30€ or a bus starting from just 5€ (if you book well in advance). Check out BlaBla Car and National Express for times and exact prices.
Bilbao and Toulouse are also within 3-4 hours by bus from Biarritz.
How to get around Biarritz by public transport:
Biarritz has a good public transportation network called Txik-Txak. This includes buses and also trains to places such as St Jean de Luz. A single trip on the bus is only 1,30€ and a day pass 3,60€ so super affordable. Google Maps tends to be fairly accurate with timings or use the Txik-Txak app. There are ticket machines and kiosks where you can get a free refillable card, but you can also get the tickets on the bus and even pay contactless.
For further daytrips, I would recommend checking Flixbus or BlaBlaCar. I have written a whole guide on the best ones and how to get there here.
How many days do you need in Biarritz?
If you only want to see Biarritz and maybe do some surfing, 3 to 4 days are enough. However, to get more out of your trip and the best potential for great surf days, as well as head on some day trips, I would recommend 1-2 weeks.
Biarritz really sucks you in with its culture. There is always a fun festival on, the evenings are spent watching sunsets with a glass of Sangria and everyone is there to surf and enjoy life. Every person I met wished they were able to stay longer in this town.
Can you swim in Biarritz?

Biarritz’s beaches aren’t only for surfing, but also swimming. The best one is Port Vieux Beach as it is located in a bay in the middle of town with no waves.
Cote des Basques and Grande Plage are also often frequented by swimmers, though you may just need to keep an eye out for beginner surfers and their out-of-control boards.
Just to note that Biarritz is located on France’s West Coast where the sea is known to be on the cold side. Biarritz is in pretty shallow water so it does get around 25 degrees over summer, but it isn’t tropical water. Surfers will wear a wetsuit all year round usually.
When to surf in Biarritz?

Biarritz is technically a year-round surf destination, though as a beginner surfer you may want to stick to June-August where the swell is smaller and waves are easiest for learning. That being said, this is peak time in Biarritz and the line-up can get pretty intense.
I personally went in early June and found the waves easy enough for learning while the water wasn’t quite as packed yet.
If you are looking to surf bigger waves, March to May and September to November are perfect. The city and surf are also much less crowded then. The biggest waves come over the winter months when you will find more expert surfers in the water.
