Rusutsu is an amazing destination for powder snow, amazing tree runs and lift tickets that aren’t overpriced. While there are some more expensive ski in/out hotels right at the resort, there are also several budget-friendly accommodation options in the area. Here are the best ones:

ToggleHow to get to Rusutsu:
While Hokkaido is mostly known for Niseko Ski Resort, Rusutsu is actually a fantastic and more budget-friendly alternative. On top of that, it has a ton of beginner-friendly runs while also having an extensive network of tree runs for more advanced skier/snowboarders. But how do you get to Rusutsu?
From New Chitose Airport in Sapporo:
From Niseko to Rusutsu:
Whether you are starting your trip in Niseko or wanting a more budget-friendly travel option from the airport, this is the trip for you. The cheapest way to get to Niseko is via train, you can check out my post on how to do that exactly here.
From Niseko, or more specifically the nearby town of Kutchan (which has some great budget accommodation options too), there is a public Donan bus to Rusutsu. It takes about one hour and costs 1,100 yen ($7.50). You can find stops, timetable and more here.
Best Affordable Accommodation around Rusutsu

Rusutsu Ski Resort is a big resort with two main parts – the East and the West mountain. Both have a big resort like hotel chain at the bottom that is ski in and out, however also quite pricy.
That being said, there is plenty of affordable accommodation around Rusutsu, many of which even have a free shuttle included in the stay. Or even better, there is free parking right at Rusutsu resort if you are renting a car.
Here are the top budget-friendly accommodation options near Rusutsu:
Affordable Accommodation in/near Rusutsu
Rusutsu Grand Cabin – A hostel/hotel hybrid with dorm rooms starting at $40. It is located in Kimobetsu, a 10 minute drive to the resort, but the hostel has a free shuttle too. A great budget-friendly option.
YOUTEI – This is the only hostel within walking distance to the slopes, unfortunately it doesn’t have the best reviews. A bunk bed is about $84 per night. The main complaint seems to be that there is only one shower and toilet.
Pension Yamada – a budget-friendly, Japanese-style accommodation close to the ski resort. Rooms go quickly so book early.
the Lobs, Rusutsu – Also located in Kimobetsu with a shuttle to the ski resort, this hotel offers beautiful rooms at around $250 per night for 2 people. At time of writing, they still have some availability.
Ohisama House – Located within walking distance to Rusutsu Resort, this is a lovely, privately owned house. There is a minimum booking range of 3 days with rooms costing about $200 per night.
Matsu House – right around the corner from the ski resort, the entire house is rented out and can fit up to 8 guests for around $450 per night. It seems to be sold out for the season, so I’d recommend inquiring about the new season in early 2026.
Pension Lilla Huset – seems to be a good, budget-friendly option within walking distance to the resort, but it is sold out everywhere. I would recommend enquiring about the 26/27 season as soon as the 25/26 season ends.
Affordable Accommodation in Kutchan
As discussed in the above “How to get to Rusutsu” section, Kutchan is well connected to Rusutsu via public bus, while also being super close to Niseko. This could mean it offers the best of both worlds for your stay while also being super affordable.
Torifito Hotel & Pod Niseko – Very fancy capsules for around $70-100 and rooms starting at $170.
Yellow House – right in the centre, with dorm beds around $100 per night. They also offer affordable family rooms.
Ski In Ski Out Accommodation Options in Rusutsu that are a bit pricier
Ski in ski out is the dream for any ski holiday, so if you are happy to splurge a bit more, these hotels are the best slope-side options. The Vale and Rusutsu are located directly on the West Mountain, from which a gondola connects to the East. The Westin is connected to both resorts via monorail.
How many days do you need in Rusutsu?
I would recommend a minimum of 3-4 days if this is the main ski resort you are visiting. If you are staying in Niseko and just wanting to explore other resorts, a day or two in Rusutsu are an amazing time too.
What are the best months to visit Rusutsu for skiing/snowboarding?
The best snow conditions are late December to February. Keep in mind that around Christmas and Chinese New Year the resort is extremely busy and expensive, so if you can travel outside of those dates, I would highly recommend it.
Mid-January and February after Chinese New Year are less busy times to visit with still amazing powder snow.
