Europe is an amazing place for first-time (and experienced) solo, female travellers as it is safe, English is spoken almost everywhere and it’s really easy to move from place to place. Here are the best and safest cities in Europe for solo, female travellers!
Travelling solo as a woman for the first time (or any time) can certainly be scary. I still remember how nervous I was before my first trip, I almost didn’t get on the plane. While I still get those pre-travel jitters now, I have learned a lot about solo travel and keeping safe. Europe in general is a really great place for solo, female travellers as it is mostly safe and you will meet so many other travel girls.
That being said, Europe is a big continent and there are cities that are easier and safer to travel than others. Europe is my home continent and over the years of travelling here, I have definitely had some very different experiences.
So, here is my ultimate list of the best cities in Europe for solo female travellers:
Table of Contents
ToggleSafest cities for solo female travel in Europe
Montpellier, France

Montpellier is actually where I started my full-time travel journey almost 3 years ago now and I love the city with all my heart. It is so safe, has many things to do and even has incredible beaches close-by.
I studied French here for a month and loved the late evenings sat on the cobblestoned streets of Montpellier with my international friends, drinking some wine and practising the language with those around us. I would highly recommend Montpellier for solo-female travellers in terms of safety, other travellers and things to do!
Don’t miss: I would highly recommend scheduling in time to visit Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, the UNESCO World Heritage Site located a 45 minute drive from Montpellier. The medieval city is an absolute highlight and there are public buses that go there if you don’t have a car.
Sarande, Albania

I have written a lot about Albania on my blog and for good reason. While I was apprehensive about travelling here at first due to others’ preconceptions, I had the most incredible time and met the kindest locals here.
Saranda especially felt very easy and safe as a solo, female traveller. I actually met so many nice girls in my hostel that I rented scooters with and we went on several day trips and cocktail nights. Highly recommend as a travel destination!

Bruges, Belgium

Bruges is a city that looks straight out of a medieval fantasy novel. The cobblestone streets are stunning and a UNESCO world heritage site as a testamony of the “brick Gothic architecture” at the time.
I felt really safe in Bruges, enjoyed the delicious dishes with a Flemish touch and found the locals to be very friendly.
Glasgow, Scotland
Glasgow is a BEAUTIFUL city, the university looks straight out of Harry Potter and the architecture everywhere is gorgeous. The city itself is very safe in most areas, though I would avoid non-touristy areas in the dark. The Scottish people are some of the kindest you will meet!
From Glasgow you can also take some amazing tours to nearby Lochs (a lake/sea inlet) – Loch Lomond for example is really easy to reach by train. You could also take a tour to Loch Ness and the Scottish Highlands like this one.
Florence, Italy

Florence is one of my all-time favourite cities and has been for years. It’s such a stunning city and the food is incredible. I also felt really safe here.
I would recommend visiting in the off-season though, such as September & October as Italy has become overrun and unbearable in the summer. Crowds are less in the autumn and the weather pleasant. During this time, it is much easier to get tickets to the Duomo and Uffizi Galleries. On top of all that, it is also the start of the wine and olive oil seasons – what more could you want!
Porto, Portugal

I’m not going to say “favourite city” again, however I really do love all the places on this guide and Porto is really high up there. It is the city of Port wine, beautiful historic buildings and winding streets.
Porto has so many incredible attractions, stunning vantage points for panoramic views and even great beaches for surfing. On top of all that, it is safe and affordable!

Budapest, Hungary

Every time I visit Budapest, I find myself wanting to live or study here for a while. The city has a great atmosphere, lots of female travellers and so much history to learn about. The ruin bars make for incredible (and unique) nightlife too.
Make sure to go on one of the free tours while you are here to learn about the history and culture of Budapest from a local.
Prague, Czech

Prague is the perfect destination for solo, female travellers. It’s safe, has the most incredible architecture around every corner and tons of history.
Don’t miss: The Astronomical Clock located in Old Town Square provides a little show every full hour from 9 am to 11 pm. I would highly recommend taking a tour that includes this highlight as every minute detail of the clock has meaning and history, it’s truly incredible.
Dubrovnik, Croatia

If you have watched Games of Thrones, you will recognise this medieval city (take a GOT tour here). Croatia in general is a great destination for solo, female travellers and Dubrovnik is no different. It is really walkable with lots of different sights and so many other travel girls.
Vienna, Austria

Vienna is the perfect mix of modern and history. It has the urban charm of a big European city mixed with the stunning palatial architecture of the past.
I have been to Vienna several times and always felt very safe and welcomed. Make sure to try a Sachertorte (chocolate cake with apricot jam) while you’re here, it is so good!
Stockholm, Sweden

I am going to end this list with a nordic city, specifically Stockholm. Though I could add many more Scandinavian cities like Oslo here – they are some of the safest and cleanest cities in Europe.
Stockholm has a unique Island cityscape that are connected by bridges and ferries. The architecture is beautiful and the Christmas markets in winter are top-notch. In summer, you will find everyone outdoors, enjoying the many green areas or sailing around the Stockholm Archipelago.
