Skiing the Canadian Rockies on a Budget - Affordable Banff Accommodation

Banff is a world-renowned ski area, with not one but three incredible resorts right by its side. If you are looking to spend a winter skiing/snowboarding Sunshine Village, Lake Louise or Mt. Norquay (or all three) without breaking the entire bank, then this is the accommodation guide for you. These are my favourite affordable stays in Banff.

How to get to Banff:

The closest airport is Calgary airport (YYC), roughly 1.5hr drive away from Banff. There are two bus options to get to Banff from Calgary Airport:

Option one is to get public transport to the city center (more info here) and then get either a Flixbus (starts at just 18CAD) or Rider Express (~38CAD) bus to Banff.
The other way is to get a direct bus/shuttle from the airport. Banff Airporter and Brewster Express start at around 90CAD directly from the airport.

If you are planning to see more of the area or head to Jasper and see some National Parks, I’d recommend renting a car or camper (find good deals here).

Best Affordable Accommodation in Banff

Banff itself is surrounded by three famous ski resorts, referred to as The Big 3: Mt. Norquay, the Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Banff Sunshine Village. I’d highly recommend booking accommodation as soon as possible before it gets super expensive.

Mt Norquay is the smallest but also most local to Banff, just a short drive or free shuttle away. It also has the only night skiing in the area.

Sunshine Village is possibly the most famous, and it’s the resort with the longest season in North America (all the way to late May). For both Mt. Norquay and Sunshine Village it makes sense to stay in Banff, or the nearby Canmore if on a budget.

Lake Louise is the last resort and about a 45 minute bus/drive from Banff. The ski area is huge with gorgeous views over the valley. There are some hotels in the small town of Lake Louise from where it only takes 10 minutes.

Accommodation within Banff

HOSTELS:

HI Banff Alpine Centre – lovely hostel, but closest bus stop is about a 20-minute walk.

Samesun Banff – good for solo travellers, good access to shuttle

HOTELS:

$ Bow View Lodge – probably the most affordable hotel in Banff, good but a little dated

$ The Juniper Hotel & Bistro – short drive to Mt. Norquay resort, best with a car

$ Mount Royal Hotel – great value rooms, has a hot tub, bus stop right outside

$$ Moxy Banff – I love a good Moxy and this one’s a great one! Also near the first stop of the resort shuttle which means you’re likely to get a seat.

$$ Brewster Mountain Lodge – nice rooms, close to shuttle

$$ Canalta Lodge Banff – Great rooms and amenities. Also one of the first stops of the free resort shuttle.

$$ Peaks Hotel & Suites – underground parking, beautiful rooms, close to main street

$$$ Fairmont Banff Springs – stunning, luxurious, ski concierge and help getting the shuttle

Accommodation in Canmore with public bus links to the ski resort

Canmore is a great place for a quieter and often more budget-friendly stay. It’s especially ideal if you have a car, as it’s just a short drive from Banff, but there is also a bus (Roam Transit Route 3 for 6 CAD) which will take you to the free shuttle in Banff.

Accommodation in Lake Louise

$ HI Lake Louise Alpine Centre – stayed here when I skied Lake Louise and it’s a lovely hostel, bring ear plugs for the trains

$$ Lake Louise Inn – short drive or shuttle to ski hill, good value

$$ Mountaineer Lodge – nice rooms, hot tub, close to shuttle

$$$ Post Hotel & Spa – stunning rooms, right by shuttle to resort

Ski In Ski Out Accommodation Options in Banff

Ski in ski out is the dream for any ski holiday, however Banff is firstly a national park and protection its nature is a priority. Hence there is only one hotel right by the ski resorts and that is in Sunshine Village:

Sunshine Mountain Lodge – Great if you don’t want to deal with the car/buses to get to the resort, however be aware that there isn’t much else around in the evenings.

Is the SkiBig3 pass worth it for budget travellers?

The SkiBig3 pass is worth it for anyone wanting to explore several resorts over a few days. It’s only worth it though, if you are planning to ski more than one resort.

If you just want to ski Sunshine Village for example, it would be cheaper to buy the tickets for just Sunshine Village online for those days. If you get a Sunshine Super Card, your Your 1st, 4th and 7th visits are free and it costs only 120 CAD, which is cheaper than one day of lift tickets.

If you already have an Ikon Pass, you already get access to the SkiBig3 included, so you won’t need an extra pass.

Do you need a car for a budget ski trip to Banff?

No, you do not need a car. Both towns of Banff and Lake Louise have free shuttles to ski resorts with your lift tickets (which are cheapest if pre-bought online anyway) and have very budget-friendly options anyway.

If you do have a car, you could stay a little outside or closer to Calgary and probably get an even cheaper accommodation deal, but parking at the resorts fills up super early during peak season.
